The Carolina Cougars are a major league baseball team based in Cary, North Carolina, established in 2026. They are part of the National League (NL) South Divsion. They were the first expansion team for the MLB since 1998, along with the San Antonio Bulls of the American League.
After the MLB's attendance began to increase again in the 2020s due to a lack of steroid usage and increased baseball interest (only 2 suspensions in the previous two seasons combined), the MLB began to explore new expansion sites.
The Carolina Cougars were originally going to be placed in Charlotte. However, due to the rapid population growth of the Raleigh area, it was chosen instead to build the stadium in a suburban area of Southeast Cary. Their first game was played on April 6, 2026, against the Philadelphia Phillies. They won by a score of 11-1.
